Toolset lesson - Using a Scroll Saw

This will be the first Toolset lesson using a power tool,

If the Scroll Saw is used properly, and sensibly then the risk of injury is very low. Therefore, we will be focusing on safety and technique when using the saws.

The toolset (TS) and mindset (MS) learning intentions for this lesson are:

Students will:

  • Know the different parts of a scroll saw and their functions (TS)
  • Understand the risks involved when using the scroll saw (TS)
  • Safely make straight and curved cuts in 3mm MDF (medium density fibreboard) wood (TS)
  • Know the correct way to replace a blade in the saw (TS)
  • I explore new materials and new areas (MS)
  • I think about and respond to feedback (MS)

How to sew on a Button


How to use a Hand Sewing Needle.

This Toolset  focuses on how to use a hand sewing needle 
 Mindset is: Here is an opportunity to explore a new DPE area and new skills

The Learning Intentions for this toolset lesson are as follows:
Students will learn
  • How to thread a needle.
  • How to tie a knot.
  • How to sew on a button.
  • How to tie a knot to finish off work.

Success Criteria
Students will know they have been successful when they have sewn buttons onto fabric and added value with an original creative design idea.

Communication/ Drama Tools/ Elements

Students will use the techniques of drama to bring the script to live theatre.
Students will use the drama techniques of  Facial expression, Voice projection, Gesture and Movement when communicating in front of an audience.

In this lesson students will be introduced to the Dance Tools/ Elements:
Time, Space, Body Awareness, Relationships, Energy
  • Move on the beat - Time
  • Move in relation to space - Space
  • Move and develop an awareness of Body Movement - Body Awareness
  • Move in relation to others or the environment - Relationships
  • Move in response to the mood of the music - Energy
  • Use Choreographic Devices to extend their Dance eg. Canon (Mexican wave), Repetition and Reversal.
  • Use Locomotor and Non-locomotor moves to develop a Dance routine.
  •  Marcus and Lucas Supermarket dancing


The Importance of Measuring Accurately

Cooking is a science, ingredients are balanced within a recipe for best results so it is important to understand how to measure accurately and how different ingredients measure differently (quantity vs density)

The learning Goals for this tool set are .....

  • Students will identify appropriate equipment to measure ingredients related to information in a recipe
  • Students will articulate the importance of measuring accurately
  • Students will identify and explain that ingredients measure differently and can affect the outcome of a product.

Toolset Lesson - Using a Hammer

This toolset lesson will have three main components:

  1. Looking at the different types of hammer and their uses
  2. The different parts of a hammer
  3. Correct technique to ensure we use a hammer safely

Toolset Lesson - Cordless Drills

In this Toolset lesson, the students will be identifying the different parts of a cordless (battery powered) drill. They will then use this knowledge to insert a drill bit to drill a hole in wood, followed by taking the drill bit out.

  • Know the different parts of the drill and their specific functions (TS)
  • Load and unload drill bits correctly (TS)

Toolset lesson - Using a Handsaw

This toolset lesson focused primarily on the correct technique when cutting wood with a handsaw. The students watched a short introductory video (below) before transferring what they had learned into practice. A strong component of this toolset lesson was how to maintain physical safety in the process.

The toolset (TS) and mindset (MS) learning intentions were:

  • Students will effectively and safely use a handsaw to cut wood (TS)
  • Students will make straight and accurate cuts along a reference line (TS)
  • I explore new materials and new areas (MS)
  • I think about and respond to feedback (MS)

Toolset Lesson - Camp Cookers

One of today's tool set lessons was on 'Camp Cookers'. Students had to gain a greater understanding of how to use a camp cooker, they also had to take into consideration a range of variables: wind, placement of cooker, access to water, safety and equipment to assist them.

The Learning Intention was:
  • TS - Students will effectively and safely use a gas cooker in preparation for the overnighter. 
  • TS - Students will organise themselves taking into consideration the tools and equipment they are using,
  • MS - I ask questions which lead to a better product
